Fine Art Photography

“Every photograph is a small act of saying: I was here. This moment happened. This light existed. And now it always will.”

About the Photography

I didn’t pick up a camera because I wanted to make art. I picked it up because I didn’t want to forget. There’s a particular quality of light over an Iowa cornfield at 5:30 in the morning — something between gold and fire — that doesn’t last more than a few minutes. If you’re not watching for it, it’s gone. A camera made me start watching.

“Before I take my last breath on my last day on this earth, I want to know that I have made a difference and have left evidence that I was here. A photograph can do that.”

My work is rooted in Iowa — its light, its land, its wildlife, and the quiet dignity of the places most people drive past without stopping. An eagle banking over the river. A honey bee suspended over a wildflower like it has all the time in the world. A cardinal burning red against a January fence post. These moments don’t ask to be photographed. You have to show up and wait for them. That’s the whole discipline.

My prints are available internationally through Fine Art America, where collectors and art lovers can choose from a range of sizes, papers, and framing options — archival quality, ready to hang. Every image in this portfolio is a permanent record. This light existed. These creatures were here. I was here.

Iowa — The Land I Know

Landscapes · Seasons · Light

Iowa has a certain light that people from other places don’t expect. They expect flat. They expect ordinary. What they get, if they’re paying attention, is a sky that goes all the way to the edge of the world and a golden hour that turns cornfields into cathedral windows. I’ve been photographing this land for years and I’m still not done with it.

02

Wildlife in Light

Birds · Animals · In Their World

Wildlife photography is a negotiation you always lose. The eagle doesn’t wait. The cardinal is gone before you raise the camera. You learn patience in a hurry, or you come home empty-handed. Over the years I’ve learned to be very, very patient. What follows is the evidence.

03

The Small World

Macro Photography · Up Close · The Invisible Detail

Get close enough to a honey bee on a wildflower and you realize you’ve entered a completely different world. Macro photography is the practice of paying attention at a scale that the naked eye usually rushes past. I waited forty minutes for one of these shots. The bee didn’t wait for anything. There’s a lesson in that about who is actually in charge.

Iowa City & Beyond

Places · Architecture · The Familiar Made Strange

Iowa City is a place that rewards the slow walker — the person willing to turn down a side street, look up, notice what’s been standing there for a hundred years. The Black Angel in Oakland Cemetery is the most famous example: a bronze figure that has darkened to near-black over the decades, surrounded by light on all sides. You could photograph her every season and never run out of something to say.

The Archive

Older Work · Rediscovered · Still True

I’ve been making photographs for a long time. Some of the work in this collection is from years ago — dug out, cleaned up, and given the presentation it deserved all along. A good photograph doesn’t expire. The light in a twenty-year-old frame is just as real as the light from this morning. These are the ones that survived.
